science underground
A speculative design project developed at Parsons School of Design.
-
The speculative design project explores the possibility of the future development of an underground world inhabited by humans, an initiative that is mobilized in response to climate disaster and made possible by biotechnology innovation.
This scenario is situated in the year of 2038 at an all-female run R&D lab in Abu Dhabi.
The design includes the invention of a fictional R&D lab/brand, its institutional goals, funders, and a science program working towards its goal of resettling climate refugees underground. This world is unveiled through the voice of Nora Amed, a scientist turned whistleblower, who discovers and exposes ethnical issues concerning her lab's research with bioluminescent funghi and it's potential use in manipulating human biology.
